Where should I send myself or loved one for more intense treatment?
Sometimes you or your loved one might need a higher level of care. There are different levels of care which is defined by insurance companies and state licensing boards:
Detox or Medically managed intensive inpatient services: This is a short-term hospitalization that can be anywhere from 24 hours to several weeks. The patient is highly unstable and requires medical assistance in detoxing and withdrawing from addictive substances such as alcohol, opiates, and other drugs. Or, the patient is suicidal and or actively psychotic and needs to be detained and evaluated by medical professionals.
Residential Treatment
Sometimes called a rehab, is a live-in health care facility providing therapy for substance abuse, mental illness, or other behavioral problems. Length of stay is usually 30 – 90 days, after which a step-down program is recommended for continued monitoring.
Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) involves a minimum of 20 and up to 40 hours of individual and group therapy per week. The patient will attend treatment
Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) involves a minimum of 9 and up to 15 hours of individual and group therapy per week.
Sober/Assisted Living houses provide a structured living environment for patients who are in PHP or IOP. Residential treatment is often cost-prohibitive for long term stays. Sober livings can be a cost effective way to help patients stay stay accountable to sobriety, treatment, school and work.
